PILA & AOSTA SKIING AND HISTORY
PILA | AOSTA
You’ll spend one day skiing on Pila’s slopes, enjoying stunning 360° views of 4,000m peaks. The new attraction ‘Stella del Couis’ refuge offers an amazing viewpoint and excellent gourmet dishes. Step back in time to visit Aosta, the “Rome of the Alps”, accompanied by your ski instructor. You will explore Augusta Praetoria and its ancient ruins along the way.
Pila sits above Aosta, featuring 70 km of well-groomed slopes, ideal for beginners to experts. A gondola lift connects the ski area to the centre of Aosta. The historic capital of the Aosta Valley is a true gem with its ancient Roman ruins.
It takes just 18 minutes to reach the slopes from Aosta. The new attraction for 2024/2025 is a panoramic refuge called The Stella del Couis. It offers 360° views of the Alps, which are over 4000 meters high. From Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn to Monte Rosa, Grivola, and Gran Paradiso.
The Romans founded the Roman City in 25 B.C., and their empire ruled for five centuries. Visitors enter the town through a Roman bridge, a triumphal arch, Roman walls and gates. Its ancient heritage features a theatre, amphitheatre, cryptoporticus, necropolis, and villas. The Dora Baltea river powered mills, supported agriculture, and made the valley an ideal place to settle.

The Romans named Aosta as Augusta Praetoria Salassorum. Today is the second Italian city (after Rome) with the most significant number of Roman ruins still visible. The Romans erected the Arch of Augustus to commemorate Emperor Augustus’s victory over the Salassi.
The Porta Praetoria was built by Romans in 25 B.C. The eastern gate marked the main entrance to Augusta Praetoria. Made of large stone blocks, it shows Roman engineering and represents the city’s strength and strategic value.
The Roman Theatre is 22 metres high and could accommodate up to 4,000 spectators. The recent restoration has revived much of the theatre’s original grandeur.
The triumphal arch exemplifies classical Roman architecture and craftsmanship. Well preserved, it stands as a lasting symbol of Aosta’s ancient history and Roman heritage.
